Oh, please...does Gladwell even know any SUV owners? You buy SUVs for two reasons: a) cargo hauling and/or b) because it's big and big means masculine. Do you think people buy Hummers for safety? No, it's like buying a sportscar, albeit cheaper - it's a macho thing. You get to sit up high and feel powerful.

If I want safe, I buy a Volvo - not an SUV.
